Beliefs – all cultures express grief at a time of bereavement and they usually have customs and practices that are observed to support that reaction. Mourning is an accepted process through which one can express these personal feelings. Though, crying, fear and anger usually prove to be universal grief responses.
These customs vary significantly by culture. Some require that close relatives wear either white or black clothing, some even expect the shaving of heads. There is usually a period of time within which the body is expected to be embalmed, buried or cremated; in hot countries this is usually shorter than in cold climes. There are also expected periods of mourning specified thereafter. That mourning usually includes some form of celebration, often involving drinking and dancing.
But the form of death rites is most usually defined not by the culture, but by the religion of the deceased.
