Artifice is a contemporary AI thriller with two antagonists and no single hero — instead, an unlikely group must band together to stop both men before their ambitions ignite global chaos. Artificial Intelligence is evolving faster than society can understand it, and two men set out to exploit that uncertainty. It is thus, Artificial Intelligence, that forms the backdrop, not as in sci‑fi fantasy but in its current, elusive and unsettling reality.
Goran Ivan Gigović, ‘Gig’, once a media‑favourite historian hired to dismantle other academics’ ideas, is bored with this ‘badge’. He sees AI as a fluid, undefended frontier where his confrontational style can dominate. Gig gets his seed funding from Adnan al‑Hassan, a former warlord presenting a philanthropic façade currently, concealing a long memory for revenge.
Gig pushes his company, Artifice, toward dangerous extremes. Al‑Hassan’s hidden agenda could trigger a new world conflict.
But four strangers begin to notice the cracks: Andy, a suburban detective who stumbles into something far bigger than his beat, Tom, a journalist chasing a story, Liz, an academic who sees the ethical fault lines, Jerry, an AI professor who best understands the technology’s capabilities and limits. Together, they form an uneasy alliance.
Their mission is simple to state and nearly impossible to achieve: stop Artifice before its AI systems become tools of vengeance — and before al‑Hassan’s hidden plan sparks a global catastrophe. Can they coax empathy from an AI system designed without conscience, and can they do it in time?
Author’s comment: Artifice grew out of my fascination with the gap between what AI promises and what it actually is today – elusive, opaque, and often misunderstood. I wanted to explore how ambitious individuals might exploit that ambiguity, and how ordinary professionals could be forced into extraordinary collaboration to stop them. The novel blends my interest in technology, ethics, media culture, and the unpredictable ways people respond when confronted with emerging threats.
