The event was organised by the National Agricultural Society. It was supported and opened by the Federico Errázuriz Zañartu, the President of Chile 1871-5, he had organised several other exhibitions of industry but this was the most significant.

It was originally scheduled to run until 31 Dec 1875, but was extended to 16 Jan 1876.
It was held in a magnificent palace purpose built for the exhibition in the Quinta Normal de Agricultura. It is today within the Quinta Normal Park, the palace is now the Chilean National Museum of Natural History.

For the event there were two long buildings, which formed the machinery gallery and the Rose Innes pavilion, housing threshing machines. There was also a restaurant.

The venue also provided a Belgian and a French pavilion. Other participating nations were Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, France, Germany, Great Britain, Guatemala, Italy, Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru, Switzerland, The United States, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Exhibitors included Onofre Jarpa, the Chilean landscape painter of the Romantic movement who was awarded a medal.
