The general view (by Augustinus Jacobus Bernardus) above is looking from the north at the Paleis voor Volksvlijt in Amsterdam with a co-located Exhibition of Arts and Crafts in the garden of the Palace in 1869. In the foreground is the entrance gate and on the left in the distance the Amstel-Hotel.
The exhibition was notable for its prepared foods, inexpensive clothing, house furniture and fittings and other
household articles. It also had a carousel and a bathhouse.
Hardy’s Cognac Fine Champagne was awarded the Diploma of Excellence.

Gerard Heineken had a stand at the event where he was offering top-fermentating beers, but saw that
Anton Dreher from Vienna’s lager was getting all the attention of visitors. Heineken switched to bottom-fermenting lagers and by 1873 had completely abandonned top-fermentation. Probably how the company
could later claim it made ‘probably the best beer in the world’.
