In 1810 Hanover became part of the Kingdom of Westphalia, and in 1815 it became the capital of the Kingdom of Hanover. By 1821 it had a population of c33,000.
Hanover in the 1850s had many developments – in 1853 the Hanoverian Southern Railway began operations, in 1854 the Hannoversche Courier newspaper began publishing and in 1856 its Museum of Art and Science was built. Its population was c70,000 at this time.
In 1859 it ran a National Exhibition.
In 1866 Hanover became part of Prussia.
