In the German-speaking area, a small Industrial Exhibition was held in Mainz in 1842 by the Grand Ducal Trade Association of Hesse in the Deutschhaus, a Baroque Palace constructed 1729-40. It became the seat of the Rhineland-Palatinate Landtag in 1950.
But it was soon surpassed, in 1844, by the General Industrial Exhibition at the Berlin Zeughaus, which attracted 3,040 exhibitors and 260,000 visitors.
