Priest End
As you turn left at the T-junction of Lower High Street, you are in Priest End. It had formed from prebend land. Prebend refers to a portion of a cathedral’s revenues granted to a canon as his stipend. This was a manorial estate that was subsumed into Thame back in the twelfth century.
The manor had been located along the western edge of Old Thame, and it included the grounds of the Prebendal House, land now belonging to Rycotewood College and Lord Williams’s school. The name is clearly indicating the end of Thame where the prebend and his community of monks and clerics had lived.
![]() The Prebendal Priest End, OX9 3AA Not open to the public but can be seen from the road Originally the house for a canon serving the Bishop of Lincoln, funded by a prebend, his stipend from a cathedral. This dates back to the 13th C and is the source for the street name Priest End. Post- Reformation (1547), the lands were forfeit. Today, it is a private house. Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees once lived here. |
