| Tannat Originally from South-West France, near Madiran in Gascony. First mentioned in documents in 1783 under the name Tanat in the département of Hautes-Pyrénées, assumed to be the probable area of origin. It was taken to Uruguay by Basque immigrants, today it is one of the most prominent grapes in Uruguay, and considered as the national grape. Taste/smell: The grape has notes of black currant and red plum, with background tangs of licorice, smoked meats, and black cardamom. It has reddish young leaves with bronze spots. The bunches are large, while the round-shaped berries are small to medium in size.
