THE STORY: Doctor Marigold is named as such for the doctor who was present at his birth. He is an auctioneer of inexpensive goods, something of a cheapskate. He marries a bad-tempered woman and has a daughter. His wife abuses his daughter, and then both die, leaving Marigold sad and lonely. He hears of a deaf-and-dumb girl who is unwanted by her stepfather, Mim, the owner of a travelling circus, He bargains for her and adopts her, calling her Sophy after his dead daughter. He sends Sophy to be educated as she prepares for womanhood. He buys a bigger cart and stocks it with books for Sophy, including his own book Doctor Marigold’s Prescriptions. She returns two years later but is torn between Marigold and a deaf-and-dumb fellow student. Marigold consents to their marriage and they move off to China, where her husband has a position with a merchant house.
