Doctor Marigold’s Prescriptions – 1865 – A Short Story

Doctor Marigold and Sophy

This was a Christmas short story published in All the Year Round.
THE STORY:
Doctor Marigold is named as such for the doctor who was present at his birth.

He is an auctioneer of inexpensive goods, something of a cheapskate. He marries a bad-tempered woman and has a daughter. His wife abuses his daughter, and then both die, leaving Marigold sad and lonely.

He hears of a deaf-and-dumb girl who is unwanted by her stepfather, Mim, the owner of a travelling circus, He bargains for her and adopts her, calling her Sophy after his dead daughter.

He sends Sophy to be educated as she prepares for womanhood. He buys a bigger cart and stocks it with books for Sophy, including his own book Doctor Marigold’s Prescriptions.

She returns two years later but is torn between Marigold and a deaf-and-dumb fellow student. Marigold consents to their marriage and they move off to China, where her husband has a position with a merchant house.
