This event derived from a strong Belgian presence at the 1883 International Colonial and Export Exhibition in Amsterdam, Belgium had been the first continental European nations to industrialise, from the 1830s.
It was located at t’Zuid or the south side of Antwerp adjacent to Antwerp’s soutern railway station and near the freshly reopend Scheldt quays. It took up 90,000 sq m of space, 25,000 sq m was built halls/pavilions for Belgian exhibits.
The main poits of interest were the Hall of Machinery and a Hall of Industry. Telephone communication in Belgian cities was under way, the venue installed phones, having connections to venues in Brussels (50kms – 32 miles away) to deliver live concerts and other performances to the show site. The French exhibited plans for the Eiffel Tower.
A feature of the show was the promotion of King Leopold’s new colony – The Congo. Inspired by the Amsterdam exposition they exhibited a Village Congolese – a human zoo?
Twenty-five official exhibiting countries included – Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Great Britain, Ottoman Empire, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Spain…
Its budget was 4m Belgian Francs, most funding came from the city, it broke even.
