The Institute’s objective was stated as the cultivation of Experimental, Natural, and Moral Philosophy, and of Useful Knowledge in all departments; avoiding Party Politics and Controversial Divinity. It defined the means it would apply as the provision of a Library, Reading Room, Museum, Classes and [annual] Lectures.
The Library provided 364 works in 1,023 volumes on Pure Sciences (21%), Mixed Sciences (27%), History (27%), Polite lIterature (23%) and Parliamentary Reports (2%), and it also subscribed to a wealth of periodicals.
The Subscription was eight shillings, which, a generation later in the mid 1860s, was the weekly wage of an engineer and twice the weekly wage of a ‘common labourer’ (source: victorianweb.org).
