Louth is a market town in Lincolnshire, its Mechanics’ Institution was founded in 1835. The President was Samuel Trought (also Louth Mayor)and the Patron was he Rt Hon Charles Tennyson D’Eyncourt (MP, FRS and cousin to Alfred Lord Tennyson). The Institute’s objective was stated as the cultivation of Experimental, Natural, and Moral Philosophy, and of Useful Knowledge in all departments; avoiding Party Politics and Controversial Divinity. It defined the means it would apply as the provision of a Library, Reading Room, Museum, Classes and [annual] Lectures.
The Library provided 364 works in 1,023 volumes on Pure Sciences (21%), Mixed Sciences (27%), History (27%), Polite lIterature (23%) and Parliamentary Reports (2%), and it also subscribed to a wealth of periodicals.
The Subscription was eight shillings, which, a generation later in the mid 1860s, was the weekly wage of an engineer and twice the weekly wage of a ‘common labourer’ (source: victorianweb.org).

The Mansion House had been built in 1750 by the Louth Old Corporation as the Assembly Rooms. It became the Louth Mechanics’ Institute building from 1853 until 1956. From then it was Louth Public Reading Room and Library until the late 1980s.
