In prehistoric times the desire to depict animals was worldwide. Later periods tended only to paint animals as part of a general scene.
As the Renaissance dawned many history painters had specialist animal painters to paint the animals within the overall scene.
From the Dutch Golden Age these specialists produced smaller paintings of their own focused on animals.
