History in this context is taken from the Italian word istoria or narrative. The term history painting is therefore a painting with a narrative, this was initially about Biblical characters and events, but during and following the Renaiassance, when religious commissions plummeted, the category took on mythical individuals and events, and real events like battles. History Painting is usually upon a large-scale mural, panel or canvas to better present the often-heroic narrative.
