During Henry VII’s reign, in 1496, this John de Denton struck a deal with William Dacre, 3rd Baron Dacre. This exchanged the family seat, Denton Hall, for Warnell in Sebergham.
John was also a signatory to a prepared inventory of Johann Dacre’s possessions at Naworth Castle.
John married Agnes Sithe, but this sounds strange, because on the previous page Richard de Denton was shown to have had two daughters Agnes and Sithe – this must be a confusion.
The eldest son of John and Agnes was Thomas Denton, who built Warnell Hall, based around a preexisting 14thcentury pele tower. Warnell Hall is a grade II listed building used as a farmhouse today. Above Warnell’s main door (see above) is a Denton coat of arms with an inscription ‘T&MD’ and it is dated 1683. The most likely T&MD are therefore a much later Thomas (1660-1737) and his wife Margery (née Threlkeld) Denton.
John and Agnes’s second son was George, known as George Denton of Cardew (see below). Their grandson, by Thomas was also a Thomas, who became knighted in 1533 to become Sir Thomas Denton.
George Denton of Cardew ( – 1638)
George rather notably left in his will – two plate jakes covered with cloth and a joined easing chaier with a quisshon worth 2s 6d – meaning two pewter chamber pots with a chair and cushion for comfort. Cardew was originally a modest 14thcentury hall house.
A later George Denton of Cardew (1650-1689) would sell it to Sir John Lowther in 1686. Today it is still called Cardew House and is Grade II listed, used as a farmhouse.
There has to be some connection, so far elusive, between these individuals and those in Buckinghamshire, they both certainly claimed that there was. One likely missing link is my GGF11 Thomas Denton 1504-1558, who lived at Hillesden and was anMP for a number of seats in the area.
