I had set myself a writing exercise to produce a Dickens version of that which Charles and Mary Lamb had produced for Shakespeare. Intended for young readers, their Tales from Shakespeare provided a very readable precis of the Shakespearian comedies and tragedies. I planned to produce an online simple-language version of each of Dickens works on this website. I consider it still to be a work in progress.
However, the exercise created a real appreciation of story and of character within the works of Dickens. But, his use of archaic language and Victorian settings means many would not be inspired to read on. I also felt it sad that most modern reworkings of Dickens seemed to have ulterior motives. Many introduce a ‘woke’ perspective, yet the original stories and their characters can work in a modern setting without such diversions.
I selected two of my favourite works of Dickens, one early and one late. Oliver Twist written from 1837-1839 and A Tale of Two Cities from 1859.
DISPLACED: OLIVE
is a modern retelling of Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens (now approaching two hundred years old). The tale is still relevant today in that social care still fails many of its recipients. But Dickens excellent characterisations, the Victorian setting and use of language have become something of a barrier to many modern readers. It changes the gender and Oliver becomes Olive. DENOUNCED: A TALE OF TWO COURTS
This is a modern retelling of A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. It switches the action to London and Tehran, and updates the death by guillotine to public hanging from a mobile crane in the Islamic Republic of Iran.
