I have recently been very busy with my writing and this site had not been updated. Now I am pleased to update the site. Let’s talk through the works I have completed across the summer.
First, I finished the screenplays for two TV mini-series:
Based in and around Bristol, THE CHAIN is a TV drama of three one-hour episodes. It follows the progress of a property purchase chain from its formation until the hoped-for, and critical, exchange. I have also produced a fourth special episode as the denouement to the whole. | THE CHAIN by Bob Denton |
DREAM TEAM by Bob Denton | This is my second three-part TV drama series. This is set in the organiser’s office of a public exhibition. The event is imaginary, the Dream Homes exhibition, but the challenges faced by the team are all too real. Two executives fight for the event directorship. |
In a busy period, I also put the final polish on two novels:
ARTIFICE Artificial Intelligence, AI, is currently promoted as either a pervasive panacea, or it is forecast as a most pressing peril. The thriller’s backcloth explores how much of AI is fable, and how much fact? Artifice is formed by Goran Gigović, an historian who decides to exploit this new technology. But he needs funds, which he achieves with Adnan al-Hassan. But Adnan, previously an Iraqi/Syrian warlord, has sinister goals of his own. Gig has a great deal of early success in grid computing and IfT, the Internet for Things. He makes real progress with new techniques applied to an American juror assessment software package which he enhances as Venire for use with the assessment of focus group responses for politicians and marketeers. They apply AI to attract those in the eSports sector. These ambitious young men are content to spend their lives in the Metaverse and are losing all appreciation of the real world. They seize on the AI opportunities Artifice offers – Adnan calls them his ‘warriors’. Gig also gathers converts to his plans by a series of conferences that discuss fundamental societal topics. These are super-TED panel debates on primary subjects like Justice and Intelligence. It becomes evident that all the attendees have been subjected to AI analytics. Artifice uses its AI’s Babel software to spread misinformation that advances the notion of a Broken Britain. It expands this with FN Pro to create false news, discrediting politicians, sporting stars and celebrities. It organises and manages riots throughout UK market towns. Adnan is coy about his plans to globalise these initiatives, but his approach could lead to WWIII. A disparate group coalesces to try to halt their plans – Tom a journalist, Liz an academic, Jerry an AI professor and Andy a suburban police detective – they are drawn together and pool their resources to combat Artifice. The resulting hostilities range across both south and north Cyprus. The denouement takes place in Port Talbot and a disused coal mine. | ARTIFICE by Bob Denton |
DISPLACED and DENOUNCED by Bob Denton | This is two books in one, it applies the storytelling skills and characterisations of Charles Dickens, to a current-day setting so that it can be fully appreciated by a modern audience. I had reviewed Dickens work and concluded that the language used was something of a barrier and the people and places were too far from our current experiences. So I took two of the novels and brought them into the 21st century: DISPLACED: OLIVE – is a current-day adaptation of the first true novel of Charles Dickens Oliver Twist (written 1837-39). This version follows Olive through the modern British care system, she becames embroiled with a Bulgarian gang in London, as her tortuous family history uncoils. DENOUNCED : A TALE OF TWO COURTS -is a current day adaptation of Charles Dickens much later historic novel A Tale of Two Cities (written in 1859), The two cities, and courts, are today’s London and Tehran. Darius, an ex-pat Iranian living in London, finds his past noble family misdeeds come back to ensnare him, he is denounced and they seek the death penalty. |
