The Historical Dictionary of Brussels states: “Less a world’s fair than an international competition on science and industry”.

The impetus for the show was driven by the Belgian politician and engineeer, Léon de Somzée, he was a deputy for Brussels in the House of Representatives

This was a period of social unrest, in 1886 there were riots based on economic grievances that was bloodily suppressed. There wereongoing demands for universal suffrage. As a result the attendance was disappointing

The venue was the Parc du Cinquantenaire, where earlier a national exposition had been held in 1880, to mark the jubilee of the fiftieth anniversary of Belgian independence. The Palace of the Cinquantenaire was built as two buildings connected to each other by semicircular colonnades in an arc. The layout of the park was designed to accommodate exhibitors’ pavilions.
