These were confused times. In May 1882 Italy joined a secret Triple Alliance with Austro-Hungary and Germany, which was regularly renewed until WWI.
In 1884 Bismarck’s held his conference on Africa to try to define the European empires approach to dividing up Africa, seeking a prominent role for Germany, one unintended outcome was to establish the Congo as the personal fiefdom of the Belgian King Leopold.
Pavilions were organized into broad categories: agriculture, didactics, fine arts, literary productions, manufacturing industries, mechanical industries, nutrition. scientific innovations, mining industries and welfare.
The Politeama was built as a 4,000 spectator arena for the Swiss Eduard Wulff’s Equestrian Circus, that
was touring Italy in the mid-1880s. It consisted of horse acts, accompanied by an orchestra, and featured
150 artistes and 94 animals.
The event included performances by François Bidel, a lion tamer and there were balloon ascents made by
Eugène Godard.
